Border Explorers Has a New Look
Border Explorers Snowmobile Club has made changes to their grooming equipment. Members voted to purchase a 1993 LMC 1800 Groomer and a new MTN 10 ft wide drag, valued at $42000.00 plus taxes & freight, total bill $51,040.00 upgrading from our 1977 Bombardia SV 256 with a 1990 8 FT wide Mogul Master Drag.
The club, incorporated in 1991, has seen many changes in the way they provide a designated groomed trail system. Where we started with an Alpine and a 4ft homemade drag, then a Track Truck groomer with a 6ft drag to a 1977 SV252 with an 8ft drag.
To provide trails earlier in the season when ice conditions don’t allow us to put the big groomer out, the club purchased two snow machines and two small drags. We have also purchased a willow cutter that is pulled by a snowmachine or quad and a branch cutter , mounted to the drag and groomer allowing us to keep those willows from following onto the trails.
To date the club has spent around $70,000.00 on trail equipment in the last three years.
With lots of consideration, the club voted to upgrade to this groomer and drag. Why are we upgrading you may ask? For one, wider trails are proven to be safer. It also has to do with the way we are funded for maintaining the designated trails through Snoman and the SSA. It is all based on a formula. In order to qualify for the best funding in Manitoba we must provide 10ft wide groomed trails.
The volunteer members maintain 113 km's on the Manitoba side & 118 km's on the Saskatchewan side for your snowmobiling enjoyment. This requires a lot of man hours to do so. From early freeze up, members have work bees to clear the trails of all fallen debris. Trail signs and markers all have to be put in place. We mark 25 different bodies of water with over 500 lake markers that all have reflective tape on both sides, which have to be removed at the end of the season, these lake markers are very important to the safety of snowmobilers as the they provide safe passage across our lakes in the case of a snow storm or for tourists that do not know their way around, it also helps local snowmobilers travel through our trails without getting lost.
Fire wood is cut for the shelters. Maintenance of all equipment, ice checks are done, and then finally, the many more hours of grooming are done as the snow conditions allow us.
The club provides two warm up shelters for your use, one on the North trail to Denare Beach (core shelter) and the Bob Douglas shelter on the Kaminis Trail.
We would like to thank Roland Able and Denare Beach Mechanical who volunteered many hours of his time and equipment on the trail from Kanamis to the Goose River clearing all the willows that had grown in.
This type of help we all benefit from, you, the snowmobiler, and us, the volunteers.
Our old Groomer & drag has sold and it new home is the Maskwa Snowmobile Club In Pine falls Mb.
Safety course
The club has two Certified safety instructors. Courses have been held in Creighton Community School in the past. The course will be held on January 30th Creighton Community School. Anyone born on or before January 1, 1989 must take the coarse in order to operate a snowmobile. Contact Creighton School for registration.
If any group or organizations would like to hold a safety course you can contact John at 688- 6087. The club would like to see all snowmobilers properly trained to operate a Snowmachine
"It is very important that we teach the new generation of snowmobilers the right and wrong way to operate their snow machine".
Are you Interested in long distance snowmobiling?
We do manage to find time for club fun also. One of our high lights is our annual club ride to the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Rally, held the last weekend of February. This year, the long distance ride will be to Melfort. Sask.club members will be attending this year’s Rally with the attempt to bring home the trophy once again. The term ride for five has been adopted by club members. The past four years we have managed to bring home the trophy for the most members riding from one club. The furthest away and the oldest rider, was won by a club member from Texas. Our furthest ride was to Broadview, SK, consisting of 1200 miles round trip. We look forward to the challenge and invite anyone interested in joining the ride to attend one of our meetings or call for info.

To help cover the costs of equipment and maintaining the trails, we offer advertising packages. If you have any questions and are interested in any of the above you can contact John at 688-6087.
Regular meetings are held at the Victoria Inn every first and third Tuesday of the month during the season. New members are always welcome./font>
